Welcome to the Pack: Remy

Remy is a 6 month old Golden Retriever pup and she looks so cute and innocent… but lately, she’s decided she might actually like to rule the roost and has been quite the heathen!
Listening to Mom? Optional. Listening to Grandma, Grandpa, or just about anyone else? Apparently that’s perfectly acceptable. Which, when you think about how our kids sometimes act like angels for everyone else and save ALL their sass for us, actually makes perfect sense. I can attest to that one firsthand.
She’s also recently started finding things she considers high value, running off to a corner with them, and growling when Mom tries to take them away.
Today was our first session together! Remy and her mom drive almost an hour to come see me , so before jumping straight into training, we gave Remy some time to decompress, explore, and get comfortable with me and the new environment.
We started with a walk and worked on engagement, recalls, and leash walking. It didn’t take long for me to notice that underneath that sweet Golden personality, this girl has very little confidence right now.
Her tail was tucked for a good portion of our session. Vehicles driving by made her nervous. People walking past made her unsure. New sights and things she wasn’t familiar with had her questioning what she should do.
So we didn’t push her too hard. We pushed her just the right amount, and when she worked through something or made a good choice, we made those paydays BIG and the rewards from both Mom and me HUGE!
That’s going to be a big part of our work with Remy. Yes, we have some manners to work on, but we also need to build this girl UP. We’re going to work on confidence, engagement, recalls, leash skills, and better decision making around those high value items. Eventually, we’ll incorporate e collar training as another layer of communication.
She’s only 6 months old, so we have plenty of puppy brain to work through, but I’m excited to watch her confidence grow and help her become the good little Golden girl we know she can be!
